Types of Paint for Your House

Choosing the right kind of paint can be challenging. There are many different types to choose from. Here are some of the comparisons.

Paint Bases

  • Oil-based Paint (Solvent-Based Paint): This is a common choice for house paint. It is reliable and durable as it is long-lasting. Oil-based paint is reasonably priced and is a great choice for trim work. It takes longer to dry than other paints and it also has a strong odor.

  • Water-Based Paint: A great interior paint with less odor. Water-based paint dries quickly and is easy to clean up. However, it is less durable so it will need to be refreshed more often and can be pricey.

  • Latex-Based Paint: A quick-drying paint that does not need primer. Good for exteriors and floors.

  • Primer: Primer prepares the surface for paint, so it’s an essential step when starting any painting project. You will get the best results if you prime first. It provides a protective layer that keeps the old paint from bleeding through.

Paint Sheens

  • Flat Paint: This is an affordable option, but it’s not vibrant. There will be no reflection or texture. Flat paint is not durable, so it is best used in a low-traffic area.

  • Matte Paint: This is a little bit more glossy than flat paint. It is also more durable. Matte paint is good to use for ceilings.

  • Eggshell Paint: This paint has a low sheen, like an eggshell. It is a fairly durable paint and it’s also affordable. Eggshell paint is easy to clean.

  • Satin Paint: This is a bit glossier than eggshell paint, but not much. Satin paint is a good middle option if you don’t want anything too flat or too glossy.

  • Semi-Gloss Paint: This paint will stand out. Semi-gloss paint is eye-catching and very durable. This is a great choice for kitchens and bathrooms.

  • Gloss Paint: This can be beautiful paint. Gloss paint looks very classy in your home. This type reflects light so it will show flaws in the wall. This is the most expensive finish.
